Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
