Users will soon have a fresh option that enables them to cut down on the amount of artificial intelligence-produced videos appearing in their streams. This step comes as the company announced that it currently hosts in excess of 1 bn AI-generated clips.
Trial and Implementation
The new functionality is undergoing trials over the next few weeks before a widespread rollout. This development aligns with a rise in content created by AI, driven by recent content generation software.
The Broader AI Trend
It has been noted that approximately a tenth of the fastest-growing channels on another major platform exclusively feature AI-generated videos. A considerable share of this content is considered low-quality AI content, a term for inferior, bulk-generated content that is typically nonsensical or surreal.
Based on user feedback that many people enjoy content created using AI tools, ranging from digital art to informative clips, and we want to give people the power to increase or decrease of that, according to their own preferences,” commented a spokesperson.
Volume and Proportions
The platform announced that there are now 1.3bn videos on its service identified as made with AI. In total, more than 100 million media items are uploaded to the app every day, making clips made by AI a relatively small part of its complete catalog.
User Control Features
Members will be able to reduce or increase the level of AI content they watch by accessing the topic control option in the application and selecting the AI content topic. Additional categories that can already be controlled under the setting include news, style, beauty, and dance.
AI Disclosure Rules
Its rules require content makers to label “realistic” AI-generated content, and it prohibits malicious deepfakes of celebrities or critical incidents. Any authentic-looking AI video that is without a tag can be removed under its user guidelines.
In addition, the platform will henceforth attach an AI-generated watermark to content made using its own AI tools, or identified by an industry-wide initiative for identifying AI-generated material. This action is designed to deter users from seeking to evade the tagging system.
Responsible AI Funding
TikTok is also establishing a $2m educational fund for experts and institutions to produce informative material about using AI responsibly. This initiative will support educational bodies focused on educating programming and robotics.
Platform Protection
The platform has justified its moderation strategy, amid discussion over proposals to cut jobs for hundreds of safety staff in Britain. The company is planning to reduce hundreds of positions in its user protection team in the UK capital, with worker representatives and online safety experts voicing alarm that staff are being displaced by automated systems.
A company official explained that staff-based oversight would remain essential, but artificial intelligence can protect employees by eliminating the most graphic content ahead of it is viewed by staff. The company stated a 76% decrease in explicit and harmful content seen by content reviewers over the last 12 months due to reliance on its AI tools.
We believe it is crucial to combine humans and technology to ensure user safety,” she said. “We’ll have people as part of that process, but we also think it’s very important to reduce exposure to harmful content as quickly as possible, which is why a lot of the machine support is really helping us work at speed.”
